Digital Banking Transformation

The goal of the project was to lift up the current user interface to a contemporary look and feel, preserving the exact same functionality.

We’ve inherited the project from another team which in 5 months has managed to implement only 15-20% of the scope. Requirements were documented in JIRA and provided by the Bank’s QA department.

Main challenge was: design should be adapted to the existing API functionality.

Our achievements:

  1. Elevated UI/UX of mobile and web applications.
  2. Consistent look and feel, validated with new technology.
  3. Signed off designs, including animations.
  4. Full design coverage of all user journeys.
  5. Established Design Systems and Design Rules for both mobile and web.

Challenges:

The project was already late in time when we took it over.

The previous design studio has created the conceptual ideas of the main flows and the overall design coverage was only around 20%.

The design concepts were created and development has been started but these concepts have never been approved by the Bank’s Head of Design. To mitigate that we’ve  facilitated multiple workshops, processed the provided feedback and received the sign off confirmation.

Technology was not validated on the inherited design concepts, thereafter it has caused issues during the implementation. E.g. one time password could not have been sent due to the designed logic. We’ve analyzed the root cause and rearranged the steps to match the technology.

Design rules were established and applied to all major flows where applicable: transaction flows, service requests and other.

The issue has been solved.

Lack of access to resources:

Due to the internal security protocols, it took the client over 2 months to grant the Business Analysts access to Jira, the only source of requirements. In order to analyze the requirements and create the designs, we’ve accessed Jira from allowed workstations on site, consulted with experts on site, utilized the sandbox environment of the legacy app and website (highly unstable one with insufficient users).

We’ve practically turned the design flows to requirement flows for the development team who had the same issues with Jira access till the very end of the project.

All in all it was a challenging project but the result is rewarding: we’ve created nice and smooth, easy-to-use mobile and web applications that will give the retail banking customers the high quality experience they deserve.
